Disability

I have been involved with teaching special needs kids that were integrated into the classroom system. Although this was challenging, it was also dead rewarding. I especially enjoyed teaching I CAN students. I CAN is a charity that provides support (in the mainstream schooling system) to bright kids that have communication difficulties. Broadwater School has a special I CAN unit.

I have been working with Independence at college since October 2000. This scheme is part of the support system that Oxford Brookes University provides. IAC includes practical support during freshers week (getting around campus, enrolment, organising lecture room support). I also take notes for undergraduates during term time. At Oxford Brookes there is a dedicated team that works full time and is based in the Helena Kennedy building.

At the moment I am working with Gill and her guide dog Nushka - they are both most excellent company, Since meeting them I am a total guide dog fan as are most people who have met Nushka. Find out more from The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association
